A Screen Wall in a Small Living Room
In many small homes the television decides the layout of the living room. Plan the screen wall deliberately so it serves the room instead of dominating it.
Choose the wall first
Put the screen on a wall that does not face a window, to avoid glare, and that does not interrupt the main route through the room. Then arrange seating around it.
Make it disappear when off
- Build shelving around the screen so it reads as part of a wall of objects.
- Choose a darker wall colour behind it so the black rectangle is less stark.
- Hide cables inside a channel or behind the unit.
Viewing comfort
Keep the centre of the screen near seated eye height rather than high above a fireplace. Size the screen to the room rather than the other way round; manufacturers publish recommended viewing distances for their models.
Sound in a small room
Room acoustics matter in small living rooms too. Rugs, curtains and bookshelves soften echo, and a compact soundbar often does more than a larger set of speakers that the room cannot accommodate.
Designed for the evenings you actually have
If the screen is mainly for live sport, plan the seating so a few friends can watch together without turning the sofa sideways. It also helps to know how and where the games are broadcast before you choose a streaming box or subscription. For readers in Taiwan, this Traditional Chinese guide to the channels and League Pass options for watching NBA games (NBA 直播收看管道) is a practical starting point.
